What we do:
The West Fund, a member of the National Network of Abortion Funds, offers free, confidential funding assistance to individuals in the west Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico who need help paying for their abortions in the form of vouchers sent directly to clinics. Our trained volunteer case managers provide health center information and financial assistance for callers through our helpline. West Fund works directly with area clinics to provide small grants that fill the gap between what patients can afford and the full cost of their procedure.
People who contact the West Fund are frequently on the move or in vulnerable positions in their lives -- they are calling a stranger to ask for money to get one of the most stigmatized health care services in the United States. In addition, Texas has continued to limit access by imposing clinic shutdown laws that have closed more than half of the clinics in the state. This leaves many people traveling hundreds of miles just to get an abortion.
We have no paid staff and are volunteer-run, as well as volunteer-funded. All money donated to the West Fund goes directly to the clinic toward abortion procedures, or towards further fundraising efforts.
Donate now to make a difference for people in west Texas.
Who we fund:
The West Fund strives to represent the diverse community of El Paso, as well as west Texas and southern New Mexico. 85% of our patients are people of color. 3 out of 4 West Fund callers are parents who already know the cost and care needed to have a child. On average, they are $738 short of affording their abortion, which averges an astounding $1,760.
Most of our patients are from El Paso, Las Cruces, or Cuidad Júarez, as well as the areas of west Texas with no access to clinics, like Lubbock and Midland. However, if a patient is located in Texas or southern New Mexico and is going to one of our local clinics, then we do our best to fund them.
We have seen the average procedure cost go up significantly, due to laws that continue it harder and harder to get to a clinic quickly. Cost is a huge factor in limiting access to a safe and legal abortion. 50% of our patients are unemployed, and those who have jobs make just $620 a month. About half of the people who call West Fund have health insurance, and while some insurances cover abortion, most health insurance in Texas, including Medicaid, exclude abortion from their coverage, putting care further out of reach.
We Need You.
West Fund is 100% volunteer-run and 100% donor funded. We need your help to make access to abortion a reality for west Texas.
